College Students and AI: Study Habits, Academic Performance, and AI Use.

Cover slide introducing a research project about college students and artificial intelligence, featuring a student using a laptop with an AI symbol. The project explores study habits, academic performance, and AI use.
Research overview showing the question of how AI use relates to college students study habits and academic performance. It looks at a 2026 Mendeley dataset from Correa containing survey data from university students in Colombia and highlights AI usage, study habits, and academic performance.
Research slide outlining three areas being examined. How students use AI for academic tasks, how AI fits into their study habits and routines, and how AI use relates to academic outcomes.
Conclusion slide explaining responsible AI use in education. It highlights using AI as a study tool, thinking critically about AI-generated information, and maintaining academic integrity. It concludes that how students use AI matters.

Title and framing questions

AI is becoming a bigger part of college life. Students use it to answer questions, explain hard topics, brainstorm ideas, and help with assignments. But how does using AI connect to the way students study and perform academically is the main question behind the project im doing. I wanted to look at how college students use AI, whether it connects to their study habits, and what we can learn about its role in education.

Process

I used a dataset from Correa (2026), available through Mendeley Data. The dataset has survey info from college students at a university in Colombia. I focused on AI usage, study habits, and academic performance. I considered getting my own survey responses, but that would have required additional approval from people. Instead, I decided to use an existing dataset. I also had to remember that the data came from one university, so it cannot represent every college student.

Artifact

I created the slides in Canva. I wanted the slides to introduce my topic, explain my research question, show what areas I was exploring, and share why responsible AI use matters. I used a consistent color scheme, good sized headings, and images to make the info easier to follow. I also added alt text to the images so that people using screen readers can understand what they show. The slides are included in this post so readers can look through the project themselves.

Reflection

The project made me think more about how technology affects the college experience. AI can be useful, but students still need to think critically, check information, and do their own learning. It also reminded me that data does not tell the whole story. Who is included in a dataset matters, and the results should not automatically be applied to everyone. If I could do this project again, I would want to compare data from more universities and different groups of students. I would also connect the project more directly to a blog post from class called Kelley Gordon’s article, “Good Visual Design, Explained.”

Credits

The dataset used for this project came from Correa (2026) through Mendeley Data. I created the slides using Canva. Images and visual elements are credited to their original creators or sources.

Generative AI Use Declaration

I used ChatGPT to generate the photos.

  1. I agree that AI is taking over a lot of college students studying habits and it will be interesting to see what information you have at the end. It is a topic i am interested in as someone who does not use it very often.
