The Project: My Project focuses on the evolution and current state of film distribution and production. Using a combination of Flourish and ArcGIS storymaps to help answer the question of does international film distribution create a genuinely global network, or does it concentrate around a relatively small number of cultural and economic hubs? This includes taking into account censorship, politics and piracy.
Why does it matter? The movement of media whether its news, film, books helps define cultural connections. It acts a bridge that connects peoples across borders and oceans and mountains. Foreign films, news, music, and social platforms inform how people visualize and interpret distant societies. Looking at how that media travels, whose media may be prioritized or pushed more, and which media is excluded from conversations?
How will it be done? Firstly, research on the evolution of the international film industry has already been done, research on modern day film distribution is also required. Then put all of that nice stuff into ArcGIS storymaps. Then, a main dataset will be visualized through the use of Flourish to help represent the data and the information given. Then it all be put together in a wondrous presentation on a website.
Process of the Artifact: The title page other than the text was taken from a template, due to its monochromatic nature that style was kept for the all slides. A neon title was chosen to evoke a sense timeliness retro noir style. The building was chosen for it’s cinematic framing and I really liked the slight distortion and curvature. It also allowed for a good space for the definition. The last was tough to figure out but it was decide it would be the most crowded as it had the most information. It returned to the black background of the title page with a few film related images with style.
