Post 6: Visual Design Fixes

A revised version of the INTENTIONALLY flawed original

In my attempt to fix one of the broken posters, I set out to relay as much of the original idea as I could without allowing it to remain unreadable. Many things contributed to this unreadability in the original, such as the inconsistent letter coloring and inconsistent theming between the multiple images used to create the flier. As pointed out by Kelley Gordon in her article Good Visual Design, Explained, it is important for a designer to “exercise caution with neon colors (such as highlighter yellow), as they may distract users and affect the overall effectiveness of the design.” The bright orange of the stamp and the bright blue of the “I <3 N Z” sticker were highly distracting, and made reading the already headache-inducing lettering even more difficult.

The images themselves were placed somewhat haphazardly, with the stamp being layered above the subline, and below the headline of the flier. The contents of the stamp itself were rendered unreadable by New Zealand flag pendants, themselves camouflaging the “study in” of “study in New Zealand” through their similar colors. To combat this, I added a white dropshadow to the header of the flier, and bolded all of the accompanying text. I also changed the background of the textboxes to a translucent kiwi green to maintain the vibrant greens seen in the Shire background. I do think the final color was a poor choice, as it could make reading more difficult for some due to its lighter hues.

I added a Ring of Power and a few lines about myths and prophecies as reference to the background image being a location for filming the Hobbit films.
